Paragraph | Continued the previous one

Introductory Paragraph
2 parts
1.   Several general statements
Begins by explaining the issue.
Example:
In some cities in the United States, teenage gangs create problems. The problems range from noisy but harmless drag races to fatal drive by shootings. Some cities are trying to stop these activities by keeping young people indoors and off the streets at night. These cities have curfew laws that require people under the age eighteen to be indoors between the hours of 10:00 or 11:00 P.M. and 6 A.M.
2.   One thesis statement
States the writer’s opinion on the issue. It often mentions the opposing view first.
Example:
Police department say that curfew laws control teenage gangs are necessary, but I feel such laws are unfair and counterproductive.
Transition signal ­­– contrast signal: however, but, and although.

Opinion Essay
·      State your opinion in the thesis statement
·      Support your opinion with reasons
·      Support your reasons with specific details

Body Paragraph
Support your opinion with reasons. Each reason is a paragraph in the finished essay.
Thesis statement: Although many people feel doctors must do everything possible to keep their patients alive, I believe euthanasia should be legalized for three reasons.
Reason 1: These patients have no chance in recovery
Reason 2: Medical costs are very high
Reason 3: The family suffers

Developing Supporting Details
·      Quotations
Reporting phase.
Example:
My older sister, who has telecommuted for the past year, told me, “I am much more productive when I work at home because there are no interruptions.”
·      Statistics
o   Statistic shows that…
o   Statistical data prove that…
o   A survey of our class shows that…

The Concluding Paragraph
1.   Restate your thesis in different words or
2.   Summarize your reasons.
You may express your final comment and make sure it is a powerful.
Example
To summarize, cloning humans is clearly dangerous and unethical. It is one thing to clone an animal but quite different when duplicating a human being. Even though scientists claim that their purpose is to help humanity, ethical people must demand an end to such experiments.


Exercise:

Introduction paragraph: Favorite movie — Frozen

There are many kinds of kids’ movie nowadays. People from any ages love this movie genre including the teenagers like me. Disney is one of the most popular and the master of kids movie and animation. In 2013, they released Frozen, a musical animation movie. And Disney makes it as a perfect combination. Another thing that make the movie is really good that Frozen is connected with another Disney movie, Tangled and The Little Mermaid. It is perfect to make Frozen as an example of good kids animation movie.
