Research on Typefaces
Type is divided into two types, Serif and Sans serif. Serif means a small line attached to the end of a stroke in a letter or symbol, or we can call it “leg”. Serif is a type that has a “leg”. For example, a capital "A" is usually has two lines in its two leg. Serif typeface was found before sans serif. Sans serif is one that doesn’t have line attached to the end of a stroke in a letter. Sans is come from the French word. It means “without”. So sans serif means without serif. Sans serif actually divided into four major groups, such as, Grotesque, Neo-grotesque, Humanist, and Geometric. Humanist is the most calligraphic of the sans serif typefaces with some variation in line width. Geometric typefaces are with based on the geometric shapes like circle and square.
Type also has a style, such as, script, decorative, roman, and non-roman. Script is a typeface that created by handwriting, or the handwriting typeface. The letters are connected each other. Decorative is a lettering that designed more for its fancy. Decorative is not easily read because it more defined to the style than to the purpose (easily read). Roman is the result of two styles combination. It was based on pairing the Roman Square Capital and the Carolingian Minuscules. Roman typeface are upright thick-and-thin weighted. Non Roman is a style that exist in many language such as Korean, Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, etc.
